Old Habits Die Hard

In the 1950s, interior design was a relatively new concern for most households.  The War of the previous decades has rendered many with little money and even less resources.  Post-war however, interior design became chic - welcome to the world of carefully co-ordinated couches and curtains.  A little hobby to keep the housewife busy.

Times have changed, and design has evolved just as much as technology has.  The home now must be user-friendly.  Indoor/outdoor flow is make or break.  The home is an investment - renovate and flick it on.  The home is not just a house on a quarter acre; the home is a villa, an apartment, a condo, a converted warehouse or shop.  Places once reserved for the bohemian, the poets, the musicians, are now places where children are raised.  We are now more adaptable and more innovative than ever.

One room in particular has been scrutinised, decorated and redecorated - the kitchen.  Over time, our homes have changed, but fundamentally the kitchen has stayed the same.  Once reserved for just the women and the help, it's always been the epicentre of a family; the heart of the home. It's still the place we gather, the venue for a glass of wine and a gossip over a cooking meal.  Without a doubt, the kitchen is the best part of a home, and the one habit to me that has stayed the same.  Here are a few of my favourites:
